With more than 25 years experience in her field, Stacy founded Berns Communications Group, LLC (BCG) in 2002 to answer the need for a sophisticated boutique corporate communications firm in the consumer, retail and fashion space. Numerous strong and long-lasting relationships with the fashion and retail industry’s top executives and CEOs, are what set Stacy apart. Her track record demonstrates a unique ability to match the news and feature requirements of the press with the complex messaging needs of her clients.
Stacy has created PR strategies around such events as company launches, store openings, and new product/service announcements, and actively advises many of the retail and fashion industry’s most high-profile thought leaders, including Li & Fung, Financo, Telsey Advisory Group, The Doneger Group, and many others. Her transactional work includes M&A deals, private equity investments, IPO work and other financial announcements.
She has an innate sense of what the story is. Her particular strength lies in consistently presenting a well-defined position and unified messages to each corporate constituency, be they clients, investors or other key audiences. With deep expertise in the consumer and business services industries, this award-winning communications executive has developed and implemented strategic corporate communication programs for such high-profile brands as Donna Karan, Saks, and Gucci, among others. Stacy has developed and executed corporate visibility campaigns for more than 200 public and private companies, all the while building solid and long-standing relationships with the national business media.
Throughout the years, Stacy has played an instrumental role in some of the most significant CEO events in fashion and retail, such as the World Retail Congress, The Financo Forum, and several FIT programs, including its student competition at the WRC. She has spearheaded industry events for Financo, Mother’s Day Council and Father’s Day Council, and collaborated on major fundraisers for Fashion Delivers and K.I.D.S.
In 1999, Ms. Berns was honored with the Silver Anvil Award for excellence in investor relations media relations for her work on The Children’s Place Retail Stores account.
Prior to founding BCG, Stacy was a principal at Morgen-Walke Associates for almost 10 years, where she was responsible for overseeing the corporate media relations department of this leading investor relations firm. Stacy has written articles for The Boston Globe and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northeastern University.
Stacy is a lover of fashion and has a passion for yoga and holistic health. Two years ago, she founded Beauty Foundation Friends with her two teenage daughters. The non-profit empowers teens with cancer, promoting friendship and encouraging teen participants to raise money and volunteer.
Michael McMullan is the managing director of Berns Communications Group, LLC (BCG), and focuses on thought leadership and corporate/financial campaigns that raise the stature of BCG’s client companies. Mr. McMullan has more than 10 years of experience in media relations and specializes in designing and executing IPO and M&A strategies. With deep expertise in the retail and consumer products sectors, Mr. McMullan has worked with leading companies including Nautica, Movado, Elizabeth Arden, and Ducati. Prior to joining Berns Communications Group, Mr. McMullan spent seven years at Morgen-Walke Associates where he led the firm’s retail and consumer media practice. Mr. McMullan holds a Bachelor’s degree in communications from James Madison University.
Emily Porro is a Senior Vice President at Berns Communications Group. Logging twenty years at some of the world’s most respected corporate communications and financial media relations agencies, Emily has established a repertoire of experience that includes corporate positioning, reputation management, brand building, corporate social responsibility, executive communication and public affairs. A specialist in financial services, technology and business-to-business sectors, Emily has represented companies at every stage of the corporate lifecycle — from entrepreneurial startups to iconic global brands — providing counsel and guidance designed to build thought leadership and share-of-voice. Clients have included American Express, Bank of America, McGraw-Hill, New York Life Insurance, Charles Schwab, Fidelity and NASDAQ. Prior to working with Berns Communications Group, she was a financial services practice leader at Makovsky & Co., served as a managing director at RF|Binder Partners, and a vice president at Sloane and Company. She got her start in Ketchum’s brand marketing practice. Her programs have won Silver Anvil, Bronze Anvil, Big Apple and Sabre Awards.
A skilled communications strategist who generates positive buzz with her carefully crafted client messages, Melissa has been an invaluable member of the BCG team since its inception. With her broad vision of our clients’ long- and short- term messaging goals, she focuses on developing compelling market positions for client companies through extensive skills in positioning, writing, marketing and industry intelligence. Melissa is able to look beyond the headlines, helping clients articulate a well-defined, consistent message to their customers, partners, investors and other key audiences. And she excels at selling that story with a razor-sharp focus on the news hook or trend most likely to catch the eye of top editors and producers.
With more than 15 years experience as a communications specialist, Melissa knows all the players, be they top members of the consumer, retail and business media, or leading executives in fashion and retail. She specializes in advising senior management on a variety of communications issues including corporate initiatives, competitive landscape, and thought leadership opportunities, and has worked closely with Bluefly, American Eagle, Talbots, and The Doneger Group, as well as industry legend Marvin Traub and Saks Fifth Avenue. Melissa has also overseen major corporate and industry events, including The Annual Outstanding Mother Awards.
Prior to joining BCG, Melissa worked at Morgen-Walke Associates, a leading U.S.-based business communications agency. While at Morgen-Walke, she developed long-standing relationships with the investment community through her marketing role on behalf of publicly traded companies. She previously managed all marketing strategies to support the New York Stock Exchange listing of Regis Corporation, owner of Vidal Sassoon, Supercuts and Jean Louis David salons.
Melissa holds a BA in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism. With a passion for helping equip hospitals with the necessary tools, specialties and expertise to save and improve the lives of children, Melissa fundraises for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. She is also a certified Zumba instructor, and loves to dance, do yoga, ski and run – mostly after her three beautiful daughters.
Danielle joined BCG in 2010, specializing in client relations and presentation management. A strong strategic thinker with a flawless eye for detail, Danielle is responsible for executing comprehensive communication plans for clients, manages BCG’s internship program, and handles all social media for the firm.
Danielle holds a degree in Finance from Hofstra University. A trained graphic designer, she spends her spare time designing event invitations.
With extensive experience in finance, marketing and investor relations, Sue Rodney has a keen ability to understand, identify and articulate the unique aspects of a client company as they relate to its various stakeholders. Ms. Rodney specializes in understanding the marketplace, the competition and the opportunity and positioning clients’ written communications to effectuate a meaningful outcome with employees, the media, customers, shareholders and other key audiences.
Ms. Rodney graduated magna cum laude from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Economics and a concentration in Marketing.
